Foster Grand Parents (FGP)

The Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) was established in August 1965 to provide older adults with a useful way to serve their communities in the retirement years, and giving them the satisfaction that comes from being needed and serving others. Curry County has been an active participant of the Foster Grandparent program since 1986, affecting the lives of hundreds of Senior Foster Grandparents and thousands of students. We are growing everyday and welcome all of our volunteers to join in to support our local educational organizations.

WHAT IS FGP:

The Foster grandparent Program is a local, state and federally funded program for qualified agencies and organizations for the dual purpose of engaging persons 55 years of age and older with a volunteer service to meet critical community needs; and to provide a high quality experience that will enrich the lives of the volunteers and those they come into contact with. Program funds are to be used to support Foster Grandparents in providing supportive, person to person service to children with exceptional needs, or in circumstances that limit their academic, social, or emotional needs.

FGP ELIGIBILITY/BENEFITS

    • Qualifications: Applicants must be 55 years of age or older and able to work a minimum of 15 hours per week in a classroom setting. It is important that Foster Grandparents have sensitivity and empathy for children with special needs.
    • Stipends: Foster Grandparents are eligible to receive a stipend of $2.65 per hour. This stipend is non-taxable and is not to be considered income. These stipends are based on income qualifications. An income certification will be done prior to the volunteer’s start date to determine income eligibility.
    • Travel: Foster Grandparents using their own vehicle will be reimbursed at a rate of $0.43 per mile. The volunteer is required to provide their current auto registration, insurance, and valid driver’s license. This travel is considered to and from the assigned school and other FGP events. The online Rand McNally mileage calculator will help determine the mileage between destinations. If the volunteer does not drive and wishes to utilize public transportation (CATS), bus passes for this use will be issued as needed. Travel reimbursement will not be issued to anyone except volunteers.
    • Physical exam: Each Foster Grandparent is required to undergo both a pre-service and an annual physical examination. This examination is provided by the program and is not designed to exclude anyone due to handicap or disability from functioning as a Foster Grandparent volunteer. If the physical reveals a condition that prevents the volunteer from participating in the program, he/she will be required to seek further medical evaluation by his or her own doctor. The Foster Grandparent Program staff will determine if the volunteer is capable of continuing.
    • Income Certification: The Foster Grandparent is required to have their income verified by the office staff annually if the Foster Grandparent is requesting a reimbursement stipend. The office staff will notify the Foster Grandparent of the anniversary date to re-certify. At this time other information will be updated such as address, phone number emergency contacts and beneficiary changes. This is also a great time to discuss with the staff any problems or concerns that the volunteer may need to address. Annual income restriction may vary from year to year.
      2018 Income Eligibility Levels for Foster Grandparents, by Household Size (Based on 200 percent of DHHS poverty guidelines):
      • 1. $24,280.00
      • 2. $32,920.00
      • 3. $41,560.00
      • 4. $50,200.00
    • Income qualifications are based on income from all members of a household. For family units with more than four members, add $8,360 for each additional member.
    • FGP strives to maintain flexibility in the scheduling of assignments. A Foster Grandparent may speak with the station and decide how these hours can be accomplished. No schedule is established by Foster Grandparent Program Director. This is the duty of the school staff and Foster Grandparents. We realize that you may have planned to do things during retirement that might conflict with your assignment. If you ever need to alter your work schedule due to conflicting commitments, just notify your station and the FGP office in advance.
